Why Everyone Is Talking About Family Martial Arts Training (And You Should Too)

Let’s be honest for a second. How much of your “family time” is spent staring at separate screens or shuttling the kids to a club while you sit in the car scrolling through your phone?

If that sounds a bit too familiar, don’t worry: you’re definitely not alone! But lately, we’ve noticed a massive shift here in North Dorset. More and more families are ditching the sidelines and jumping onto the mats together. From our dojang in Sturminster Newton to our sessions in Shaftesbury, the “Family Martial Arts” trend is blowing up.

Why? Because it’s not just about learning how to kick (though that’s pretty cool). It’s about building a Second Family and growing together.

At Unity Martial Arts, we’re all about genuine personal development. We aren’t interested in being a “McDojo” that just hands out belts for showing up. Hell no! We want you and your kids to build real confidence, real discipline, and real memories.

So, why should your family join the movement? Let’s dive in.

1. Creating a “Second Family” Environment

When you join Unity, you aren’t just joining a gym; you’re joining a community. We pride ourselves on being a “Second Family” for our members. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, you’re welcomed with open arms.

Our founder, Chris Ryu, is an Autism Specialist and STEM Ambassador. That means our teaching style isn’t some rigid, “shouty” authority. It’s patient, flexible, and inclusive. We work with everyone: including neurodivergent students: to make sure everyone feels they belong. Training as a family amplifies this. You aren’t just bonding with your own kids; you’re connecting with other families in North Dorset who share your values.

2. Shared Goals and a Shared Language

Ever tried to ask your kid how school was, only to get a one-word answer? “Fine.”

When you train together in TaeKwon-Do, you suddenly have a whole new world to talk about. You’re both learning the same patterns, struggling with the same balance drills, and aiming for that next belt. You’ll find yourselves practicing kicks in the garden or discussing the five tenets of TaeKwon-Do over dinner.

Sharing these goals creates a massive sense of teamwork. You aren’t just “Mum” or “Dad” giving orders; you’re a teammate. You’re working toward something together. And when grading day comes around? The pride you’ll feel seeing your child earn their new belt: and the pride they’ll feel seeing you earn yours: is unbeatable.

3. Seeing Each Other in a New Light

This is a big one. Usually, kids see their parents as the people who have all the answers (or at least the people who tell them to brush their teeth).

On the mats, that dynamic shifts. Your kids get to see you struggle with a new move. They see you sweat, they see you persevere, and they see you succeed. It humanises you! It shows them that it’s okay to be a beginner and that hard work is how you improve.

On the flip side, you’ll be blown away by your child’s focus. Seeing your “Little Dragon” (check out our Little Dragons program here) stand tall and demonstrate Indomitable Spirit is a game-changer for any parent.

4. No More Sitting on the Sidelines

Why should the kids have all the fun?

If you’re already driving them to Sturminster Newton or Shaftesbury for their Junior TaeKwon-Do session, you might as well get involved!

Family martial arts training is an incredible way for adults to get fit without the boredom of a treadmill. It improves your flexibility, core strength, and mental health. Plus, it’s a brilliant stress-buster. There’s something very therapeutic about hitting a pad after a long day at work: trust us on that one!

5. Practical Skills for the Real World

While we love the tradition of TaeKwon-Do, we’re also very big on practical self-defense. We teach escapes, de-escalation, and how to stay safe.

Training as a family means you’re all on the same page regarding personal safety. You can discuss boundaries and awareness in a way that feels empowering rather than scary. It gives you peace of mind knowing your kids are developing the “Street Smart” skills they need as they grow up.

What to Expect at Your First Session

We know that walking into a martial arts school for the first time can be a bit nerve-wracking. Is everyone going to be a ninja? Will I look silly? Is it okay if I’m not fit?

The answer is: Don’t worry!

  • What to wear: Just some comfy joggers and a t-shirt. You don’t need a formal uniform (dobok) right away.
  • What to bring: A bottle of water and a positive attitude. That’s it.
  • Who is welcome: Everyone. Seriously. From age 3 to 103. Whether you’re an absolute beginner or looking to get back into it, we’ve got a spot for you.

We’re just getting ourselves set-up for a fantastic year, and we’d love for your family to be a part of it. If you’re in North Dorset and looking for something that builds character, fitness, and family bonds, you’ve found it.
