Why Family Martial Arts Training Will Change the Way You Bond with Your Kids

Let’s be honest for a second. Between the school runs, the work emails that never seem to stop, and the endless "what’s for dinner?" debate, finding actual quality time with your kids can feel like a secondary job. Usually, "family time" ends up being everyone in the same room but staring at different screens.

Is that okay? Well, it’s life, but it’s probably not the deep connection you were hoping for when you started a family.

If you’re living in North Dorset, whether you’re in Sturminster Newton, Gillingham, or any of our surrounding villages, you’ve likely seen kids heading into martial arts classes while parents sit in the car scrolling through their phones. But at Unity Martial Arts, we do things a bit differently. We don't want you to just be a taxi service. We want you on the mats with us.

Training together as a family isn't just about learning how to kick or punch; it’s about building a "Second Family" environment where you grow alongside your children.

Breaking the "Sideline Parent" Cycle

Most parents are used to being spectators. You watch the football match, you watch the dance recital, and you watch the grading from the plastic chairs at the back of the hall.

When you join our TaeKwon-Do sessions, that dynamic shifts instantly. You aren't just a witness to your child’s progress; you're a partner in it. You’re both beginners. You’re both struggling to remember that pattern or keep your balance on one leg. There’s something incredibly humbling, and hilarious, about a 7-year-old mastering a move faster than their dad. It breaks down the "authoritarian" barrier and replaces it with mutual respect.

Little Dragons Confidence

A Second Family in North Dorset

Unity Martial Arts isn't your average "McDojo." We aren't here to just sell you a belt and send you on your way. Our founder, Chris Ryu, is an Autism Specialist and STEM Ambassador, which means our approach is built on genuine personal development.

We pride ourselves on being a "Second Family." For many of our members, the dojo is a safe space where they can be themselves. This is especially true for our Little Dragons (ages 3-6) and our students with special educational needs (SEN). When a family trains together, that sense of belonging doubles. You aren't just joining a club; you’re joining a community that supports your mental health, your fitness, and your personal growth.

Shared Struggles Build Stronger Bonds

Why train in martial arts together? Because shared struggle creates the best bonds.

When you both have to push through a tough session or prepare for a grading, you develop a shared language. You can talk about the technicalities of a side-kick over Sunday lunch or practice your nunchaku strikes in the garden. You become a team.

In a world that often separates adults and children into different "zones," the martial arts mat is the great equaliser. You’ll see your kids' resilience first-hand, and they’ll see you persevere when things get difficult. That’s a powerful lesson for them to learn, that Mum and Dad have to work hard for their goals, too.

The "McDojo" Warning: Quality Over Everything

We’ve all seen those clubs where everyone gets a black belt if they just keep paying the monthly fee. Do we do that? Hell no!

At Unity Martial Arts, we believe that a belt has to be earned. If we just gave them away, they wouldn't mean anything. When you and your child finally earn that next stripe or belt, you’ll know you actually put in the work. That integrity is what makes the achievement so special. It teaches your children that in the real world, quality and effort matter. We don’t compromise on our standards because we care about your family’s development too much to lie to you.

What to Expect (And No, You Don't Need to Be Fit!)

A common anxiety for parents is: "I’m too old/unfit/uncoordinated to start."

Nonsense.

Most of our adult members started exactly where you are. Our classes are designed to be inclusive for everyone. Whether you’re an absolute beginner or looking to get back into fitness after a decade off, we’ve got you.

What should you wear?
Just something comfortable! Leggings or joggers and a t-shirt are perfect for your first few sessions. You don't need the full dobok (uniform) on day one. We’re just getting ourselves set up to welcome you, so expect a friendly, no-pressure environment from the moment you walk through the door.

What should you bring?
A bottle of water and an open mind. That’s it. We’ll handle the rest.

More Than Just Kicking

While we focus on TaeKwon-Do, our curriculum is holistic. We incorporate self-defence (escapes, de-escalation, and ground defense) and even specialised training like Ryu Do, our developing holistic martial art. For families, this means you’re learning life skills that keep you safe and mentally sharp.

For our neurodivergent students, the structure and sensory-aware teaching style provide a level of support you won’t find at a standard sports club. We adapt to you, not the other way around.
