As you may have seen over on our social media, Mr Ryu has been busy producing Korean headbands with the tenets on. These include the 5 tenets of ITF Taekwon-do, but also the 2 extras that were taught in a style Mr Ryu used to train in. Wearing headbands was common in those classes, but not too common today. Our headbands can’t be bought, only earned.
Headbands will be presented, along with certificates on or just after the 1st of every month. We know that some students might not want to wear headbands – we don’t mind what you do with them. They’re great for tying up sleeves for nunchaku practice!
There’s 7 to collect and if you collect all 7 you’ll be presented with a special headband. You also can’t win an award 2 months running so it’ll take over a year to earn them all.
The instructor & helper team are consulted every month and nominations can come from any student, so if you’d like to nominate a student for an award, speak to one of the Instructor team.
July Awards
Honour
Mrs Whittaker
Mrs Whittaker trained with some of us at another club previously. There’s some politics which we won’t go into, but I believe she handled the situation very honourably. We’re delighted to have her in our team and very much look forward to her grading for her 2nd Dan in the near future.
Courtesy
Mr Plummer
I consider Mr Plummer to be a close friend, but he’ll always be super polite and courteous whenever we’re in “club mode”. You’ll see him bow on entry, bow to the other black-belts when they enter, bow when he enters “the floor” and bow when he gets to his place.
Integrity
Ben
From lesson 1, Ben has worked super hard and has been someone to watch. Ben is always at a good standard and this is as someone that trains once a week! Ben knows right from wrong and sets a great example for other students. I can see Ben being an instructor one day. Definitely one to watch and a worthy winner of the Integrity award.
Perseverance
Milo P
Many of our Juniors struggle to remember patterns – we get it, it’s hard and sometimes confusing. Milo just keeps on trying and is making great progress towards his next belt.
Self-Control
George W
Lots of our students have come a long way. It’s easy to forget this when we see them every week, but that’s why we keep notes. George has worked hard to improve focus, glue his mouth shut and somehow even managed to convince himself not to dance in-between kicks! I love seeing George grow and can’t wait to see him continue improving.
Courage
Milo S
Milo S entered a big scary competition with us earlier this year. It’s his first time doing something like that and we know how scary it can be. There were a lot of delays on the day and Milo’s category kept getting bounced which certainly didn’t help the nerves. Even though it’s hard, he powered through and did a great entry in the flying side kick competition. I sincerely hope that the experience hasn’t put him off competing as I know he’ll do great.
Community
Matt
If we can every convince Cat to join then of course she’d get one too! Cat and Matt are always there, cheering everyone on, offering help, sometimes a bit of back-seat coaching but we’ll let them off that! We’re privileged to have lots of amazing super helpful parents in the Unity Family, but not many of them also train (yet!). Matt is a cornerstone of the Unity club and we love having him here.
